During the month of September, I signed up to volunteer at the Manning Family Children's Hospital. As of now, I am still waiting on the final steps of finishing the onboarding process. I chose to get involved with the children's hospital because it is something I am very passionate about. Prior to coming to NOLA, I worked as an anesthesia technician at a children's hospital in Austin and as a substitute teacher for the Austin Independent School District. Children are an underserved population that I truly enjoy working with, and I am excited to get started, hopefully next month. I am getting involved with the Miracle League this fall, which I discovered this week. As a substitute teacher, I held a long-term position working with kids with disabilities or who were struggling academically. I loved spending time with them, and that's why I'm drawn to the Miracle League's mission of establishing a league for those who are often excluded from regular sports due to the special needs of their disabilities. I just signed up and hope to get started this next weekend.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the start to this fall semester so far and have particularly enjoyed learning about the interconnectedness of pharmacology. As you move on to the next section or module, certain concepts always recur, such as the importance of P450. I think the upcoming sections on ANS and CV pharmacology will be my favorite because I will get to apply my background in physiology, and I really enjoy anything involving the nervous and cardiovascular systems. I'm currently happy with my performance in the program, but I have to keep working hard and can't get complacent. I also love the close-knit community of the pharmacology program and can't wait for what's to come.
